Company Overview
Schweitzer Incorporated has been serving the construction needs of their clients throughout Southwest Michigan since John J. Schweitzer founded the company in 1962. The company was founded and has maintained steady growth for decades by providing prompt, professional service to their clients.
John’s strong ethics and continuous drive to exceed clients’ expectations enabled him to establish business relationships with a number of prestigious and respected clients.
Over the years, the Schweitzer name has become synonymous with integrity, honesty, quality of workmanship and dedication to their clients and the community amongst their peers, competitors and subcontractors.
Upon John’s retirement in 1981, J. Chris Schweitzer became the company President and David L. Schweitzer joined the firm as its Vice President. Chris and David were able to maintain and strengthen the relationships that John had established by staying focused upon the guiding principles established; honesty, integrity, hard work, responsiveness and delivering the highest level of quality possible to their projects by incorporating state of the art means and methods without loosing sight of the value of doing so while maintaining a direct personal relationship with their client.
Schweitzer became a third generation family business in 2000 when Andrew D. Schweitzer joined the firm upon graduation from Michigan State University. Tom Beuchler joined the firm as a Vice President in 2007. In January of 2009 David Schweitzer retired and was appointed to the position of Chairman of the Board, Tom Beuchler became President and Chief Executive Officer and Andrew Schweitzer was promoted to Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
All of the principals of the company past and present worked in the field for a number of years. The knowledge gained in doing so helps them relate to the challenges the clients and field personnel experience throughout the course of a project from first hand day to day experience on the job site. It is with this knowledge that they have earned and maintained the respect of their personnel and subcontractors.
It is without a doubt however that the success of Schweitzer Inc. is attributable to the talents and dedication of their employees. These employees have embraced the philosophies upon which the company was founded. They have enabled the company to grow by consistently exceeding our clients’ expectations. Over 80% of the work that Schweitzer Inc. performs each year is for repeat clients; many have been doing business with Schweitzer since its early years. Many of these clients are known to have established the highest level of documented requirements and expectations in regard to quality, safety, cleanliness, timeliness and cost control in the industry.
As a result of these relationships and expectations Schweitzer Inc. has been delivering services utilizing sophisticated management techniques many years before they became standards in the industry.
As the expectations and demands of their clients have evolved and diversified throughout the years so have the delivery methods and techniques Schweitzer Inc. has developed to meet and exceed them. Their employees have worn many hats and have become expert in a number of very different fields within the construction industry.
We are proud to say that we are one of very few that have been successful at providing construction services to our clients through many different approaches, including Construction Management, Design Build and General Contracting. We have been successful in doing so by recruiting, hiring and retaining employees of varied backgrounds that are willing and capable of adapting to the needs of our clients.
In addition to providing overall management services we are also available to serve our clients, if deemed of value to them, by self performing many of the finish trades that make a statement as to the quality of a facility. Many of our clients appreciate the fact that we have these services available to them for their maintenance needs as well. They include carpentry, wall covering, industrial coatings, millwork, iron work and metal fabrication.
Schweitzer Incorporated has never aspired to be the largest contractor in Southwest Michigan. We don’t believe that we can continue to successfully deliver exceptional projects consistently by trying to be everything for everyone. We have a well defined market strategy that says we will only pursue clients and projects that we are convinced are a good fit both for them and for us. We will only commit to a comfortable volume of work to ensure that we are able to staff our projects with A-team personnel. We are committed to managing our projects with seasoned veterans incorporating 21st century project management tools and techniques while maintaining a personal interaction between our corporate officers and our clients’ to ensure that their goals and objectives are being met or exceeded.
“Our guiding principle is service. We provide the knowledge, speed and flexibility to do the job right, be on time and be on budget. Our passion and drive to provide unique plans that fit our clients exacting needs and focus on building trustworthy relationships makes the planning and building process easy and successful.”
